Our modes of instruction are through lectures, recitations, and office hours. These are available only in person; there will be no recordings or Zoom option. Experience has shown that students and staff have more meaningful experiences in person.
1) Lectures
Classes are held on Mondays and Wednesdays 3:00–4:30 pm in 54-100. Most classes will be a mix of traditional lecturing and in-class exercises. These exercises are not graded and are meant to support real-time engagement with the material.
We encourage you to ask questions throughout class and to take notes in whatever form you prefer. In addition, we expect you to bring your laptop to class, so you can download any associated code for the lecture. Some exercises will involve reading, writing, or fixing code. Laptop usage must be focused on class material; see our policy page.
Most lectures have associated textbook readings. The book is available both as a hard copy and as an e-book from MIT Libraries, with code and errata online.
Guttag, John. Introduction to Computation and Programming Using Python, Third Edition, With Application to Computational Modeling and Understanding Data, MIT Press, 2021.
2) Recitations
Recitations are held on Fridays at the following times and locations:
- 10 am in 1-190
- 11 am in 2-190
- 1 pm in 6-120
- 2 pm in 6-120
You may attend any section you like; ignore any section assignment given to you by the registrar.
In 6.1000, recitations are optional. They are intended to review content from lecture that week, and no additional material necessary for the assignments will be presented. If you feel secure in your knowledge from lecture, then feel free not to attend. However, if you need further clarification or would simply like more practice, we encourage you to attend a section regularly and get to know the TAs.
3) Office hours
We offer extensive office hours for help with course material and problem sets. Office hours are also required for completing problem-set checkoffs (see the Assignments page). These are held in room 38-370 at the following times:
- Mondays–Thursdays, 11 am to 9 pm;
- Fridays, 11 am to 5 pm.
However, there will be no office hours during Mondays and Wednesdays 3–5 pm, due to class. Office hours may be also canceled some days due to holidays; these will be noted on our calendar.
When you arrive at office hours, add yourself to the Help Queue in our website's menu bar. You must be logged in via your MIT Kerberos account to access the queue. If you are having trouble, speak with the TA-in-charge in the room.
Additionally, Andrew will offer instructor office hours in 38-648 on Thursdays 1:30–2:30 pm.
If you would like to meet with an instructor but cannot make this time, you are welcome to schedule an appointment by emailing 6.1000-staff@mit.edu
